Cynthia Consentino discusses Birdies and Madonnas and earlier work that led to an exploration of the figurine. Birdies and Madonnas (currently on display at AMOCA) are two recent series that alter commercial ceramic figurines by adding new heads and other parts. Exhibited as wall installations that mimic domestic collections and decoration, these sculptures examine the symbols imbedded in the figurine, what they reflect about our culture and its ideas of gender and religion, as well as its ideas of art, worth, function and beauty.
