GUATEMALA: Route of the Mayas Tour

Please join us and travel back 1,700+ years to an advanced Neolithic culture known to the world as the Mayans.  Majestic, mystery, wisdom and more will be revealed as we travel through Guatemala on this incredible adventure of a life time. For the first time, the AMERICAN MUSEUM OF CERAMIC ART (AMOCA) will host THIS special tour, AVAILABLE TO MUSEUM MEMBERS ONLY.This group will trek through jungle brush filled with wildlife to include Howler monkeys to caracaras to crocodiles, leading to the sites of Tikal and Uaxactún, formidable archaeological sites of the Mayans. Walk the cobblestone streets of ancient Antigua, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Colonial buildings, archaic churches, and monasteries abound.  Visit the colorful art galleries; museums filled with clay and stone artifacts of the Ancients.   Open-air plaza markets will whet your shopping appetites for crafts to include colorful pottery, exquisite silver jewelry, hardy woodcarvings, and incredible hand-woven textiles.  Fresh air to fresh fruits will engage your senses each moment. The gorgeous town is surrounded by…volcanoes!  MexiMayan Academic Travel and I have made a very special arrangement to visit nationally known ceramist Carlos Chacon. Also, a visit to a local pottery enclave of San Antonio Palopó will enhance your appreciation of indigenous clay works.
This tour will be guided by a professional, local archaeologist/scholar (Señor Jose Benitez) to enhance the learning process. The special air conditioned bus will take us to all our designated sights.  A terrific meal plan and restful hotel accommodations are in place. You will marvel over the charming rooms at Santo Tomás Hotel at Chichicastenango.  Superbly appointed Hotel Atitlán sits on the water’s edge of gorgeous Lake Atitlán awaits you. And the prestigious 5-star resort and spa of Hotel Santo Domingo in Antigua will linger in your minds as the best ever accommodations. Conde Nast gave its top rating.
