Juan Quezada: The Legend of Mata Ortiz • June 8

June 8 – December 30, 2019

Opening Reception, June 8, 6-9pm

Juan Quezada, Vessel, Collection of Michael Wisner

Meet the potter that rediscovered a lost art form, ignited the Mata Ortiz pottery movement, and transformed his community – Juan Quezada. Born in 1940 and based in Chihuaha, Mexico, Quezada taught himself the process of creating ollas in the pre-Hispanic Mimbres and Casa Grande cultural traditions. He developed a thriving cross-border trade and revived an economically struggling Mata Ortiz community, providing over 450 artists with a new source of income.

Quezada’s works are in museum collections in the United States, Europe, and Japan.
