Mata Ortiz Extravaganza
Workshop: SATURDAY, May 31, 2014 and SUNDAY, June 1, 2014
10:00AM – 4:00PM BOTH DAYS
Over the past 40 years, the pottery making phenomenon has swept across the town of Mata Ortiz. Presently there are over 300 potters working in the Mata Ortiz area bringing with them a newfound wealth. Additionally, many families are able to stay home and work in collaboration with one another which allows the strengthening of family ties.
Diego Valles earned his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, and he has studied abroad in Sydney, Australia and Paris, France. His wife, Carla Valles, has completed a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering. Diego has made a decision common to many young people from the village. He has chosen to be a potter. He has developed an original style, turning his pots into modern sculptures by cutting out complete sections of the sides, leaving curving supports for the remaining upper sections of the pot.
