Fractured Foundations: 250 Years of American History – Exhibition Overview
The American Museum of Ceramic Art (AMOCA) is proud to announce Fractured Foundations: 250 Years of American History.
AMOCA’s exhibition Fractured Foundations coincides with the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. For this exhibition, AMOCA invited ceramic artists to reconsider a historical event through the lens of contemporary art, challenging historical narratives and offering a more accurate perspective on our country. The work selected for this exhibition demonstrates resilience, injustice, triumph, and the impact of federal, state, and/or local policies, while also reflecting upon or referencing an event in US history.
The exhibition has both a curated and a call for work component. AMOCA has curated a list of acclaimed ceramic artists whose work explores issues that are reflected in the theme of this exhibition. Confirmed curated participants include Natalia Arbelaez, Chotsani Elaine Dean, Morel Doucet, Salvador Jiménez-Flores, Cathy Lu, Vick Quezada, Jos Sances, Kukuli Velarde, and Patti Warashina.
AMOCA also issued an open call for ceramic work, inviting ceramic artists to propose their own project for the exhibition. The dual-component exhibition model ensures more equitable representation, reflecting the exhibition’s goal to highlight people and topics that have previously been marginalized.
The exhibition will run from June 27 to November 29, 2026.
