Diego Valles has always believed collaborative artwork was the result of individual introspection. However, when it comes to collaboration in clay between partners in life, collaboration is truly the work of love, resilience and bad memory.

Carla Martinez Vargas and Diego Valles have shared the last fifteen years of their lives together as husband and wife–and, for the past six years, they have also shared a studio space and a love for clay. As a result, they have played off of each other’s reflections as they’ve moved forward or backward as potters, artists, and parents. Over the past two years, Valles has wondered about the relevance of his work beyond its visual aesthetics. This led him to experiment with mediums other than clay in order to communicate different ideas. It has also led him to contemplate, not only to understand himself as a solipsist, but also to understand the ideas of others. This is the key to creating something together, whether in art or in daily life.

When the two of artists were offered the opportunity to share this exhibition, they reflected on these ideas and how to communicate them into physical objects. At the end of the day, they realized that working together on art shares the same principles as collaborating in daily life. It requires love for the material, resilience to accept the failures, and bad memory to move forward and try again.
